Substitutions and Variations
Whole chocolate chips would work in this recipe for Christmas crack or you might want to use dark brown sugar for a richer, more molasses-like taste. Try another kind of nuts or even some dehydrated berries or other fruits.
Some home bakers like to top their Graham cracker toffee with candies for a colorful touch, or you can even swap the Graham crackers for another kind of cracker or cookie. If you only have unsalted butter you can add a little pinch of sugar to the recipe.
How to Serve Graham Cracker Toffee Bars
These are so yummy it doesn’t matter much how you serve them, since they’re going to disappear fast anyway! But they do pair well with more savory snacks, since they are so sweet.
So, if you’re making several dishes to serve, consider something that isn’t sweet such as jalapeno popcorn or mini pizza bagel bites for a nice contrast.
How to Store Toffee Graham Cracker Bars
Store: Keep the Graham cracker toffee bars in an airtight container for up to a week. Room temperature is fine unless your kitchen is especially warm and, if so, just keep them in the fridge so they don’t become gummy.
Freeze: Storing them in the freezer is a good idea because they will keep for weeks and you can just put however many you want to eat on the counter to thaw out.
Christmas Crack Recipe FAQs
The key to Graham cracker toffee bars is to work fast. Have the Graham cracker sheets ready on the baking sheet ready before you work on the butter and sugar mixture. Once it reaches a simmer, pour it over the Graham crackers in the baking tray (here) before it cools or sets. If you delay, you’ll find it’s hard to spread and you will need to re-melt it.
Any kind of chocolate chips would work here. If you want the Graham cracker toffee bars less sweet, you might want to use dark chocolate or semi sweet chocolate chips instead of sweet melted chocolate, for a little savory touch. For the same reason, you might want to add a pinch of salt, especially if you only have unsalted butter, else they could come out too sweet.
