Pizza in a Heart Shape Ingredients

A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Flour: Although you can use regular all-purpose flour, there are many gluten-free flour blends to choose from too. I usually use Bob’s Red Mill 1:1 gluten free flour blend.
Active dry yeast and baking powder: To get a perfect texture in the crust.
Honey: Balances out the salt in the crust.
Grated parmesan: For a cheesy flavor. You can use the pre-grated stuff or grate your own, as you prefer.
Olive oil: The base of the seasoned oil you brush over the crust.
Toppings: Mozzarella, tomatoes, basil, pepperoni, pizza sauce – take your pick!

Prepare the pizza dough: Combine the water, honey and yeast and leave it for 5 minutes. Once the yeast has bloomed, you can add the rest of the dough ingredients to the mix. Let the dough rest for about an hour in which time it will rise.
Shape your pizza: Roll the dough into a greased pizza pan or on a cookie sheet and press it into a heart shape.
Add the seasoned oil: Warm the oil, butter, garlic, salt and Italian seasoning together and brush this mixture over your pizza crust.
Bake the crust: Give it 7 to 10 minutes in a preheated oven.
Add your toppings and bake again: Add pizza sauce and any toppings you want and bake again until the cheese melts and the pizza is golden brown. Let it sit for a while before slicing and serving, garnished with fresh basil if liked.

Substitutions and Variations

Pizza dough: If you’re pressed for time, you can use store-bought pizza dough instead.
Add more herbs: If you want to add fresh herbs (such as the basil) sprinkle those on right at the end. I love sprinkling dried oregano over my pizza before baking. Oregano seems to suit every pizza no matter what the toppings are.
Gluten-free: Gluten-free flour works fine in this pizza or you can use regular flour or pizza flour (or a blend) if preferred.

Serving Suggestions

Appetizers: Begin your meal with heart-shaped pork potstickers.
Side dishes: Pizza pairs nicely with anything from garlic bread to lemon parmesan salad or an iceberg wedge salad
Desserts: Finish off with strawberry tiramisu or some cheesecake cookies.

How to Store Heart Shape Pizza

Store: Keep leftovers wrapped in foil in the refrigerator and eat within 2 to 3 days.
Freeze: You can freeze it for up to 2 months – don’t add fresh herbs before freezing as they’ll thaw out mushy.
Thaw:
 Defrost in the refrigerator overnight.
Reheat: Warm leftover pizza slices up it in a dry (no oil) skillet and warm over a low flame for a hearty lunch. That crisps up the base and warms the toppings. It also doesn’t dry it out like the oven or microwave might.

Top Tips

Shaping the pizza: Don’t worry about making the shape perfect. It isn’t necessary to make a symmetrical heart. This pizza is bursting with rustic charm and as long as it roughly resembles a heart, it’s fine.
Large pizza or mini pizzas: This recipe makes one large heart pizza. If you prefer, instead of one large pizza you could try to make mini pizzas instead.
Let it rest before serving: Pizza comes out of the oven very hot. Let it sit briefly so you don’t burn your mouth!

Heart Shaped Pizza FAQs

What are some tasty topping ideas?

This wonderful Valentine’s dinner idea suits pretty much any pizza toppings you want to add. Ensure they are also gluten free. Shredded mozzarella cheese, fresh mozzarella, tomato, basil, and perhaps gluten free pepperoni slices are always great. Heart shaped pepperoni would be so cute!

Is this best served hot or chilled?

I usually let it sit for 5 to 10 minutes before serving because it comes out the oven piping hot. It’s great served warm. Leftovers can be warmed back up or enjoyed straight from the refrigerator.

For the Pizza Crust:

Oil for the Crust:

Optional Toppings:

  • pizza sauce, any kind, as needed
  • mozzarella cheese, fresh, small balls or slices
  • basil, fresh
  • cherry tomatoes, halved
  • pepperoni, gluten-free if needed
  • parmesan cheese, shredded

Instructions

Make the Crust:

  • In a mixing bowl pour the warm water and honey, add the yeast and let it sit for 5 minutes to bloom.
  • Once the yeast is foamy add in 2 tablespoons of the olive oil and all remaining dough ingredients, mix well until everything is combined. The dough will be thick and sticky.
  • In the bowl, form the dough into a ball-like structure, then drizzle the top with the remaining 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Cover the bowl with a tea towel or plastic wrap and let the dough rest in a warm area for 45 to 90 minutes (45 minutes is plenty of time, however if you'd like to develop/deepen the yeast flavor you can let it sit for up to 90 minutes).
  • Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F.
  • After the dough has rested, prepare a cookie sheet or pizza pan by lightly oiling it. Roll your dough onto the prepared pan and gently start pressing it into a heart shape. Set aside to rest for 15 minutes

Make the Seasoned Oil:

  • While the crust is resting, prepare the garlic oil/butter mixture.
  • In a microwave safe dish put the oil, butter, garlic powder, salt, and Italian seasoning. Microwave on high for 10 seconds or until melted. Stir to combine.
  • Brush the butter mixture onto the top of the crust making sure to get all the edges.

Bake the Crust:

  • Bake the crust for 7 to 10 minutes until it's just barely set and no longer doughy.

Add Toppings:

  • Take the pizza out of the oven and top with your favorite toppings.
  • Turn the oven up to 500 degrees F.

Bake the Assembled Pizza:

  • Bake the pizza for another 10 to 15 minutes or until the cheese and toppings are melted and golden. Watch carefully so it does not over cook.
  • Remove from the oven and let sit for a few minutes before cutting.
  • Sprinkle with fresh herbs such as basil, cut into desired shapes and serve immediately.
