Top Tips

Use high-quality butter: It’s the star of the show, so go for the best you can find.
Toast the nuts: If using plain pecans, toast them lightly to enhance their flavor.
Serve at room temperature: Butter spreads best and tastes more flavorful when it’s not cold.
No need to be exact: Don’t get too hung up on making the butter design perfect, you’ll be loading it with all of the toppings so you won’t really see much of the waves/pattern that you are making. Measure with your heart!

Pecan Praline Spice Butter Board FAQs

How did the butter board trend start?

A recipe developer and food stylist Justine Doiron posted a butter board how-to viral video that started this whole viral trend that is sweeping Tik Tok. She credits chef Joshua McFadden for the idea for the inspiration behind the butter board trend.

How thick should I make the butter on a butter board?

Try to get the butter between ¼ and 1/3-inch thick. The thickness will depend on how much butter you use, of course, and the dimensions of your wooden cutting board.

What’s the best way to serve a homemade butter board?

This kind of snack can be served with a butter knife, so people can take what they want and spread it on to their bread (to prevent double dippers). Or you can serve it communally so people can dip their slice of bread in there and scoop up what they want.

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup salted butter, at room temperature, use good quality butter
  • Cup glazed pecans, or pralines
  • ¼ Teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ Teaspoon ground allspice
  • ¼ Cup honey
  • flake salt

Instructions

  • Chop or crush the pecans into small pieces. There will be some fine crumbs, and some chunks, both are good.
  • Take the softened butter and use a large spoon to smear the butter in the center of a serving platter or wooden cutting board. The butter should be roughly ¼” – ⅓” thick. Push the butter around to create little waves/patterns throughout the butter. This texture helps to hold the toppings.
  • Sprinkle the top of the butter with the chopped/crushed pecans, cinnamon and allspice.
  • Generously drizzle the honey all over the top, making sure to get all the way to the edges of the butter.
  • Sprinkle a bit of flake salt to top it off.
  • Slice your bread, and for a special touch – warm or slightly toast the bread. Arrange the bread around the butter on the board. Fill any gaps with extra pecans, and serve with extra honey.

For a different take, try drizzling with hot honey (spicy hot, not heat hot) instead of regular honey. Also, you can substitute goat cheese, or cream cheese or even sour cream for the butter. Lots of options!
