Pretzels come in different shapes, so you might prefer to use the square pretzels or rods rather than the looped ones. Or alternate by using some of each shape. More about Pretzels

As you know, pretzels can be large or small, savoury or sweet, and hard or soft. They are usually formed in what is known as a ‘pretzel loop’ which is a symmetrical design. And everyone has their favourite type!

Can you guess how far back the history of the pretzel goes? Actually it’s thought that a monk invented them way back in 610 AD. They might have been a reward for children learning their prayers, hence the shape looking like arms folded in prayer. The pretzels were called ‘pretiola’ which means little rewards.

In the 1500s, pretzels were part of wedding ceremonies. Just like with wishbones, the bride and groom would make wishes, break the pretzel, then eat it to symbolize their union. This is just as romantic as these Valentine snack pretzels!

Different Types of Pretzels

These days, pretzels come in many different flavours. They can be topped with salt crystals, nuts, seeds, cinnamon, sugar or glazes. They can be stuffed too – the larger, soft ones can anyway. Savoury ingredients like cheese or mustard might feature in a stuffed pretzel recipe, or even icing or cinnamon sugar in sweet ones.

Pretzels also come in various shapes, like braids, letters, rods, sticks, and loops. The original looped shape was handy for bakers though, who could use sticks or strings to hang them up.

Storing Valentine Pretzel Treats

You can store this Valentine’s Day treat in an airtight container for up to 1 week. If you are taking these to a party or other get-together, wait to put them into a container until the chocolate has hardened. This will avoid them sticking together and making a mess.
