Buttermilk biscuits: Grab a roll of 8 canned biscuits (such as Pillsbury).

Cheddar cheese: Shred your own from the block instead of using pre-shredded (it’s just better!)

Substitutions and Variations
Gluten-free option: If you want a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour and a gluten-free biscuit dough.
Breakfast sausage: I used hot sausage but you can use any kind you want. Turkey sausage can be used in place of pork sausage.
Vegetarian version: Swap the sausage for your preferred vegetarian alternative, adding a splash of oil to the pan (instead of using sausage grease).
Different cheese: Swap the shredded cheddar cheese for pepper jack, mozzarella, Swiss cheese, or any other preferred type.
Readymade gravy: Use a sausage gravy mix to save time instead of making your own homemade gravy.
Spice it up: Add some finely chopped jalapenos or a pinch of chili powder.
Add some veggies: Chopped mushrooms, broccoli, zucchini, bell peppers, or onions would also be good in this biscuits and gravy casserole recipe.

Thaw: Defrost it in the refrigerator overnight.

Top Tips
Grease the baking pan: Don’t forget to grease the pan, otherwise the casserole will stick.
Thickening the gravy: Keep an eye on the gravy as it thickens. It can thicken quickly and you don’t want it to get lumpy or scorched.
Let it cool: Give the biscuits and gravy breakfast casserole 10 or 15 minutes to cool before slicing and serving. It will still be hot but some of the moisture content will have settled, making slicing easier.
Biscuits and Gravy Casserole FAQs
No. Cooking it uncovered means some of the moisture will cook off, ensuring the finished dish isn’t soggy.
First, because it will be piping hot, and second, so some of the moisture can evaporate. That makes it easier to cut nice, clean slices that don’t fall apart.
Sure. The roll of buttermilk biscuits is a handy, time-saving touch but you can use your own recipe if you prefer.
