Cherry Lime Caipirinha Ingredients

I used fresh cherries for this, along with fresh limes. The fresh fruit gives a much better taste than if you were to use frozen cherries or bottled lime juice. Of course you can use whichever kind you prefer.

Cachaça or dark rum goes into this cocktail with cherries and lime. Top it off with club soda or your favourite kind of sparkling or seltzer water. I like crushed ice in mine, although ice cubes work too.

This Brazilian cocktail is so easy to make as well. For a cherry lime caipirinha you need to hull the cherries and quarter the limes first. Mash the cherries up a bit with a wooden spoon to release some of the flavour and juices. Add the lime and ‘smoosh’ that as well.

Add the cherry syrup next and then the rum. Finally add ice then club soda and serve right away. I promise if you like cherries and lime, you will love it!

What is Cachaça?

You will see the recipe calls for cachaça. You can use cachaça or dark rum in a cherry lime caipirinha.

What is cachaça, you might be wondering. It’s a distilled spirit made by fermenting the juice of sugarcanes. This drink is usually only used as a tropical cocktail ingredient outside of Brazil. Especially in cherry lime caipirinha and other caipirinha recipes.

Whether you are trying it by itself or making a Brazilian cocktail, you’ll find it sweet, spicy and fruity all at once. This clear liqueur has to have 38- 48% alcohol and be made in Brazil to count as authentic cachaça.

Is Cachaça a Type of Rum?

Cachaça is made from fresh sugarcane juice which is fermented then distilled. Rum is made from sugarcane molasses, which is a by-product created after the refinery has boiled cane juice to get sugar crystals out of it.

So although both cachaça and rum are made from sugarcane, they aren’t the same thing.

There are two kinds of cachaça – unaged and aged. The unaged kind (white or silver) is often used as a cocktail ingredient. The aged kind (yellow or gold) can be aged for up to a year. Unaged cachaça is fine to use in the best summer cocktail recipe (this one!) But save the aged kind to sip neat since it’s premium.

If you can’t find cachaça and you still want to make this cocktail with cherries, I recommend using dark rum instead in equal measure.

This cocktail with cherries is amazing but there are other cocktail recipes you can make with similar ingredients.

For example, mojito which is also rum-based but tastes very different because of the mint and sugar. Then you have dark ‘n stormy which is a combo of dark rum, ginger beer and lime.

If you love this Brazilian cocktail the odds are you’ll be curious to try more! You can always experiment with your favourite flavours. Cachaça or dark rum can be used to make many different cocktails.

Caipirinha is one of the most famous Brazilian cocktails. The word caipirinha means ‘country little girl’. It originated in the Sao Paolo countryside. One story has it that cachaça, honey, garlic, and lime (not the best summer cocktail recipe) was combined to fight the Spanish Flu.

Another story is that sailors swapped rum for cachaça when they got to Brazil.

Locally made cachaça is cheap and it’s popular in various parts of Brazil. You get three choices usually when ordering a caipirinha in Brazil. The most economical is a ‘basic’ made with cheap cachaça. Next is the ‘especial’ made with a midrange cachaça. If you prefer to splurge, a ‘lux’ version is made with a premium brand.
