Combine the perfect sweetness of cherries with the unmistakable zesty tang of lime in a cherry lime caipirinha. This is one of the best summer cocktail recipes ever. As well as the cherries and lime, you will need cherry syrup and either cachaça or dark rum. Add club soda and ice to this cocktail plus some cherries to finish it perfectly.
This Brazilian cocktail is a great pick for those warm spring or summer evenings. It’s sweet, zest, refreshing, and oh so delicious. You don’t have to choose between sweet, zesty and tangy, because this Brazilian cherries cocktail boasts them all.
Why You’ll Love This
- It’s delicious: Every great cocktail starts off with great ingredients and this one is a real contrast in terms of different flavours.
- So easy to make: Just like with many other Brazilian cherry cocktail recipes, this one is easy to put together. If you can mix ingredients together, you can rustle up this delicious drink.
- Nice for spring or summer: As the weather warms up, you’ll be thinking less about winter cocktails like vodka mules and more about light, sweet refreshing ones like this cherry lime caipirinha.
Cherry Lime Caipirinha Ingredients
I used fresh cherries for this, along with fresh limes. The fresh fruit gives a much better taste than if you were to use frozen cherries or bottled lime juice. Of course you can use whichever kind you prefer.
Cachaça or dark rum goes into this cocktail with cherries and lime quarters. Top it off with club soda or your favourite kind of sparkling or seltzer water. I like crushed ice in mine, although ice cubes work too if you prefer those over crushed ice.
This Brazilian cocktail is so easy to make as well. For a cherry lime caipirinha you need to hull the cherries and quarter the limes first. Mash the cherries up a bit with a wooden spoon to release some of the flavour and juices. Add the lime and ‘smoosh’ that as well.
Add the cherry syrup to the cherry caipirinha recipe next and then the rum. Finally add crushed ice then club soda and serve right away. I promise if you like cherries and lime, you will love it!
What is Cachaça?
You will see the recipe calls for cachaça. You can use cachaça or dark rum in a cherry lime caipirinha over crushed ice.
What is cachaça, you might be wondering. It’s a distilled spirit made by fermenting the juice of sugarcanes. This cherry caipirinha drink is usually only used as a tropical cocktail ingredient outside of Brazil. Especially in cherry lime caipirinha and other caipirinha recipes over crushed ice.
Whether you are trying it by itself or making a Brazilian rum cocktail, you’ll find it sweet, spicy and fruity all at once. This clear liqueur has to have 38- 48% alcohol and be made in Brazil to count as authentic cachaça.
Is Cachaça a Type of Rum?
Cachaça is made from fresh sugarcane juice which is fermented then distilled. Rum is made from sugarcane molasses, which is a by-product created after the refinery has boiled cane juice to get sugar crystals out of it. It’s a great addition to so many holiday cocktails.
So although both cachaça and rum are made from sugarcane, they aren’t the same thing.
There are two kinds of cachaça – unaged and aged. The unaged kind (white or silver) is often used as a cocktail ingredient in holiday cocktails. The aged kind (yellow or gold) can be aged for up to a year. Unaged cachaça is fine to use in the best summer cocktail recipe (this one!) But save the aged kind to sip neat since it’s premium.
If you can’t find cachaça and you still want to make this cocktail with cherries, I recommend using dark rum instead in equal measure.
Best Summer Cocktail Recipe Ideas
This cocktail with cherries is amazing but there are other cocktail recipes you can make with similar ingredients.
For example, mojito which is also rum-based but tastes very different because of the mint and sugar. Then you have dark ‘n stormy which is a combo of dark rum, ginger beer and lime. The lime offers a sour taste to contrast with the sweetness of the ginger beer. That’s also nice garnished with lime quarters, as with many other tropical inspired cocktails.
If you love this Brazilian cherries cocktail, the odds are you’ll be curious to try more, as long as your of legal drinking age of course! You can always experiment with your favourite flavours. Cachaça Brazilian rum or dark rum can be used to make many different cocktails, all of which are cool and refreshing served over crushed ice.
Caipirinha is one of the most famous Brazilian cocktails. The word caipirinha means ‘country little girl’. It originated in the Sao Paolo countryside. One story has it that cachaça, honey, garlic, and lime (not the best summer cocktail recipe) was combined to fight the Spanish Flu. Imagine how much better that would taste with Brazilian cherries!
Another story is that sailors swapped rum for cachaça when they got to Brazil.
Locally made cachaça Brazilian rum is cheap and it’s popular in various parts of Brazil. It’s ideal for making caipirinha cocktail, various cocktails with Brazilian cherry and other delicious recipes. You get three choices usually when ordering a caipirinha in Brazil. The most economical is a ‘basic’ made with cheap cachaça and that’s one of the country’s classic cocktails. Next is the ‘especial’ made with a midrange cachaça. If you prefer to splurge, a ‘lux’ version is made with a premium brand and a nice, heavy rocks glass.
So the next time you are in the mood to experiment with summer cocktail recipes and add to your cocktail recipes range, try this cherry lime caipirinha. It’s the perfect blend of fresh, fruity, sweet, zingy, and refreshing.
Cherry Caipirinha FAQs
Make the cherry flavoured caipirinha cocktail up to a couple of days ahead if you want. Just make sure you give it a good shake before pouring and don’t add the ice until it’s time to serve the drinks.
If you’re out of lime but have the other ingredients for cherry caipirinha cocktail, you might wondering if you can still make this. The answer is yes but of course the flavour is going to be a bit different so you might like to adjust the quantities accordingly.
