Fresh mint is just amazing in this recipe and it’s super-easy to grow your own. Grow it in a container though because it spreads like wildfire! Pick the leaves off the stems for this recipe. The stems won’t blend properly into the drink.
Feel free to vary the ingredient amounts in this frozen mint lemonade. Swap ¼ cup of the lemon juice for lime juice if you want a tarter flavour. Perhaps add a little more sugar too. It’s best to use fresh citrus juice for the freshest flavour.
This refreshing limonana reminds me of a mojito. In fact another name for the drink is virgin mojito. The ingredients are similar. You might like to add a splash of white rum, vodka or tequila to this mint slush drink if you want to spike it! Or even Arak, which is an aniseed flavour drink that is well-known in Israel, Turkey and Greece. Bourbon would also work in this recipe, I’m sure!
This drink is a beautiful dark green in colour which makes it look like a health drink! Well, mint and lemon do have nutritious benefits! It’s also sublimely refreshing.
Frozen Mint Lemonade Variations
This lemon and mint drink is found in North America, Latin America and Europe, as well as the Middle East. It can be prepared using whole muddled mint leaves, pureed mint leaves or even mint-flavoured syrup. Crème de menthe would add the mint flavour and an alcoholic kick too.
Use either still or sparkling water to make this frozen lemonade recipe. It can be served granite style (also known as smoothie or slushie style) by incorporating the ice or you can serve the refreshing limonana over ice cubes if you prefer. The second way minimises the risk of brain freeze!
Optional add-ins include maple syrup, black salt, apple juice, and ginger. You could also make this frozen lemon summer drink into popsicles.
Sugar is the traditional sugar used in this drink but honey could be used in its place. You could try maple syrup if you don’t mind such a difference in flavour. Artificial sweetener would be another option for those who don’t want to use sugar but still want the sweetness. Also some people have a much sweeter tooth than others, so just adjust the sugar or sweetener amount to suit your palate.
