Halloween Breakfast Mummy Ingredients

A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Refrigerated pizza dough: A versatile ingredient. It’s always worth keeping a can of this in the refrigerator.
Cheddar cheese: Or your favorite kind of cheese.
Scrambled eggs: For protein and flavor.
Breakfast sausage and bacon: You can use one or the other, or both!
Candy eyeballs: To decorate them.
Hollandaise sauce: Complements the breakfast ingredient flavors.
Red food coloring: To give your hollandaise sauce the look of blood!

How to Make Halloween Breakfast Mummies

For more detailed instructions with weights and measurements, jump to the printable recipe card.

Prepare the refrigerated dough: Roll out the dough and cut it into 6 pieces.
Add the fillings: Top the dough pieces with cheese, egg, sausage, bacon, and another piece of cheese.
Shape the mummies: Snip the dough edges with kitchen scissors or a sharp knife to look like a fringe and crisscross these mummy strips over each other to resemble mummy bandages. Make holes for adding the eyes later.
Bake them: Arrange them on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and brush with melted butter, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Bake until deep golden brown on top, then cool for a few minutes.
The finishing touches: Push 2 candy eyeballs (these work well!) into each cooked mummy where you make the eye holes. Add enough red food coloring to the warm hollandaise sauce to make it bright red, then serve immediately.

Substitutions and Variations

Gluten-free option: If you want an equally delicious gluten-free version, use gluten-free pizza dough.
A sweet version: Swap the refrigerated dough for cinnamon roll dough to make mummy cinnamon rolls. If you’re doing this, swap the cheese, eggs, sausage and bacon for chocolate chips, apple butter, chopped fruits or berries, the garlic powder, salt and pepper for cinnamon and sugar, and the red-colored hollandaise sauce for strawberry syrup and powdered sugar or black icing.
Crescent roll dough: Because crescent rolls are smaller, you’ll have less dough, so the mummies will be smaller. Also, you won’t need to brush the garlic butter on top because crescent roll dough is already buttery.
Different fillings: Swap half the shredded cheese for cream cheese or swap the bacon and sausage for chopped portobella mushrooms. Sundried tomatoes and sliced jalapenos are other ideas for the filling.
The eyeballs: Instead of candy eyeballs, you can use a small round of fresh mozzarella with a sliver of black olive to make each eye.

Mummy Halloween Breakfast Rolls FAQs

Can you cook them with the eyeballs in place?

No, these need to be added before serving. If you’re storing leftover mummies, you’ll find the eyeballs bleed and go mushy, so swap them for new ones before serving.

Can you make this Halloween breakfast in advance?

Yes, bake them until light golden and keep in an airtight container. When ready to serve, bake at 350°F until deep golden brown, add the eyeballs and serve.

Can you use something other than hollandaise sauce?

Yes, although the creamy buttery flavor of hollandaise is really good with these. If you prefer, you can use a cream gravy or even mayonnaise. Another idea is to use marinara sauce or tomato ketchup – that way you don’t need the red food coloring either.

Halloween Mummy Breakfast Rolls

Treat the whole family to Halloween mummy breakfast rolls this Halloween. They’re savory and flavorful, loaded with eggs, sausage, cheese, bacon, and more.
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 30 minutes
Servings: 6

Ingredients

  • 1 Can refrigerated pizza dough, 13.8 Ounces can
  • Cup cheddar cheese, shredded
  • 8 eggs, scrambled
  • 9 Ounces breakfast sausage, cooked and crumbled
  • 12 Ounces bacon, cooked and chopped
  • 2 Tablespoons butter
  • 1 Teaspoon garlic powder
  • ¼ Teaspoon salt
  • ¼ Teaspoon black pepper
  • 12 candy eyes
  • Cups hollandaise sauce, warm
  • food coloring, Red, a few drops

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 380 degrees F.
  • Roll out the pizza dough on a clean surface to be roughly 18” x 12”.
  • Cut the dough lengthwise in half, then make 2 even cuts horizontally so that you have 6 equal pieces.
  • In the center of each piece of dough, layer cheese, scrambled eggs, breakfast sausage, bacon, and a bit more cheese.
  • Using a clean pair of kitchen shears, snip all the edges around each square of dough, about every ¼” to ½” or so, and about 1” deep. It will look like a fringe when done.
  • Crisscross all the pieces by gently stretching over the top of the layered toppings then pinching to secure the loose ends underneath the bottom of the dough on the opposite side. Continue to do this until all the dough has been crisscrossed and your mummy has taken shape.
  • Pick one end of each mummy to be the head. About an inch down from the top. Use your kitchen shears to slice, or your fingers to pull an opening where the eyes will go after the mummies have baked.
  • Place the mummies on a parchment lined baking sheet.
  • In a small microwave safe bowl, melt the butter with the garlic powder, salt and pepper. Once melted, mix well, then gently and generously brush the mummies all over with this mixture.
  • Bake in the preheated oven for approximately 10 to 15 minutes. The mummies are done when the tops are deep golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool for a couple minutes.
  • Place 2 eyeballs in the empty space that you created for the eyes before baking, and place your finished mummies on your serving platter or plates.
  • Just before serving add the food coloring to the warm hollandaise sauce, you can start with about 8 drops of food coloring and add more to reach the desired color.

Follow the pictures: The instructions for making Halloween mummies are much clearer when you follow the photos, so you can see exactly how to form the mummies.

I tested these out (without the hollandaise sauce) and they were a hit! I think I will try some with canned Crescent Rolls next time.
