Mummy Hand Pies Ingredients

A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Premade pie dough: Puff pastry works well for this recipe and you can use store bought pie crust, or make your own if you prefer.
Raspberry jam: For the filling. Red-colored jam looks like blood!
Mini marshmallows: When melted, these make a simple drizzle to go over the mummies and resemble bandages.
Egg: Egg wash adds a nice golden brown color to the pastry.
Powdered sugar: To dust the baked mummy hand pies.

Rolled dough, a bowl of marshmallows, a bowl of beaten egg, a bowl of red jam, and a gingerbread man cookie cutter on a marble surface set the stage for a Halloween mummy hand pie recipe.

Assemble the hand pies: Roll out the puff pastry rectangles and cut out an even number of shapes with a cookie cutter. Arrange half on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Add some jam to each and top with the other half of the pastry cutouts, pressing down with a fork to seal all around.
Bake them: Brush over some beaten egg wash and bake until golden brown.
Decorate the mummy hand pies: While they’re cooling on a wire rack, melt the marshmallows and then drizzle them over the pies to make thin strips that look like mummy bandages. Add candy eyes and/or dust with powdered sugar, if liked.

Substitutions and Variations

Gluten-free option: If you want a gluten-free version, use gluten-free pastry sheets.
Extra decorations: Add chocolate chips with colored frosting to make eyes for the mummies, or just use candy eyes.
Pastry alternative: Use thick flour tortillas instead of a puff pastry sheet. Handle them carefully so they don’t tear.
Another jam: Swap the raspberry jam for another flavor, perhaps blueberry, peach or strawberry jam instead.
Warm spicy taste: Add a pinch of nutmeg or cinnamon to the jam.
Homemade pie crust: If you prefer, you can make the pie dough yourself. Just roll it out and proceed with the recipe.
Not a marshmallow fan? Drizzle over melted white chocolate instead.
Cinnamon sugar topping: Sprinkle a little cinnamon sugar over the marshmallow drizzles (before it fully dries, to make it stick).

How to Store Mummy Pastry Pies

Store: Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator and eat within 3 days. It’s best to add the marshmallow drizzle just before serving.
Freeze: Freeze them assembled but unbaked. First freeze them on a baking sheet and then transfer into a freezer Ziploc bag for up to 3 months. Bake them from frozen, adding some extra time to the baking time. You can also freeze cooked pies.
Thaw: You can thaw them in the refrigerator or simply reheat from frozen.
Reheat: You can warm these back up in the microwave, air fryer or a warm oven.

Top Tips

Marshmallow drizzle consistency: Let the melted marshmallows cool a bit before drizzling. You need them thick but still pourable. If they’re too liquidy give them a little while longer to cool and they’ll thicken.
Let them cool completely: Don’t add the marshmallow drizzle until the pies are cool, otherwise the heat from the pies will make the marshmallow drizzle melt and look messier.
Make plenty: Double or triple the recipe to make a batch, because leftover mummy hand pies will definitely get eaten (and they freeze well!)

Raspberry Jam Mummy Dessert FAQs

Can you make these in advance?

Yes, assemble these perfect Halloween treats ahead and keep them refrigerated until baking. They’ll be good for up to 24 hours in the fridge before baking.

How many hand pies does this recipe make?

That depends on the size of your cookie cutter. The more people you want to feed, the smaller you can make the hand pies. They will taste delicious any size! If you invest in this set of gingerbread man cookie cutters, you have the choice of 4 different sizes.

Can you make these in another shape?

Sure! Swap the gingerbread man cookie cutter for a pumpkin or or maybe a skull one! You can still drizzle over marshmallows for decoration. Pumpkin-shaped hand pies would be good with orange frosting and the skull ones with white frosting (adding black candies for the eyes!)

Halloween Mummy Hand Pies

Not only are these hand pies the perfect Halloween treat but they’re quick and easy to make. Think flaky pastry, a raspberry jam filling and sweet marshmallow drizzle.
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 12 minutes
Total Time: 27 minutes
Servings: 8

Ingredients

  • 15 Ounces pie crust dough, or 2 readymade pie crust sheets
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • ½ Cup raspberry jam
  • 1 Cup mini marshmallows
  • powdered sugar, for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
  • Roll the pie crusts out on a floured surface if they are not already rolled out.
  • Use the cookie cutter to cut out as many shapes as you can from the pie crusts. You need to make an even number of shapes as you’re making both tops and bottoms.
  • Arrange half of the cutout shapes on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet.
  • Spoon a little jam in the center of each one, leaving a border around the edges.
  • Add the remaining shapes on top of the jam-covered ones and press together the edges using fork to seal them.
  • Brush the hand pies with the beaten egg so they’ll have a golden finish.
  • Bake for 10 minutes or until they are golden brown.
  • Remove the pies from the oven and cool on a wire rack.
  • Microwave the marshmallows in a bowl in 15 or 20 second intervals, stirring between each one until smooth and completely melted.
  • Let the melted marshmallows cool slightly so they’re thick enough to drizzle over the pies without running too much.
  • Using a spoon or a small-tipped piping bag, drizzle the marshmallows over the cooled pies to make a wrapped mummy effect. If you like, also add small dots of melted chocolate or use little candy pieces to make mummy eyes.
  • Dust the finished mummy pies with powdered sugar if liked or decorate them with edible eyes (both optional).

Notes

Marshmallow drizzle consistency: Let the melted marshmallows cool a bit before drizzling. You need them thick but still pourable. If they’re too liquidy give them a little while longer to cool and they’ll thicken.
Let them cool completely: Don’t add the marshmallow drizzle until the pies are cool, otherwise the heat from the pies will make the marshmallow drizzle melt and look messier.
Make plenty: Double or triple the recipe to make a batch, because leftover mummy hand pies will definitely get eaten (and they freeze well!)
