Homemade Guava Applesauce Ingredients

The main ingredient in guava flavoured applesauce is the apples. Gala apples are especially good for this recipe but there are other options to choose from. Consider Fuji, Golden Delicious, Jonamac, McIntosh, Braeburn, or even a combination.

The next ingredient is guava and you will want to use fresh fruit for the best guava flavoured applesauce. Grab some sugar or artificial sweetener if you want to sweeten your applesauce from scratch. This is optional however because the apples and guava will add natural sweetness. If you usually buy unsweetened applesauce you can leave this ingredient out or reduce the amount.

Cover the pan and bring the mixture to a boil. After that, let the homemade guava applesauce mixture simmer until the apples are soft enough to mash and a lot of the water has evaporated. Don’t worry about the mixture drying out because the fruit releases juice as it cooks.

It’s hard to say where guava originated since they’re found on most continents now and grow best in tropical climates. But we do know the first guava reached North America in the 19th century and it was grown in Florida. Actually Hawaii also had guava but it wasn’t one of the States back then. India produces more of this fruit than any other country – 41% of the world’s guava total in fact.

This fruit boasts potassium, antioxidants, fiber, and Vitamin C. You can tell a guava is ripe because it will yield to light pressure and have a strong, fruity smell. If yours are a bit harder, keep them on the countertop for a couple of days then try again.
