A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Oreos: Use Double Stuf or Mega Stuf. Having more cream filling means it’s easier to get the legs to stick.

Substitutions and Variations

Gluten-free option: If you want a gluten-free version, use gluten-free Double Stuf Oreos and gluten-free pretzel sticks.
Candy eyes: You can make your own eyes for the spiders using a dot of white frosting and a halved chocolate chip for each one.
Pocky alternatives: Black or red licorice would work or you could use plain pretzel sticks.
Oreos: You can use another brand of chocolate sandwich cookies if you prefer. Or try peanut butter, pumpkin spice or another Oreo variety.
Melting wafers: Use milk chocolate wafers or milk chocolate chips instead if you want to, or another color of melting wafers. You can even use some frosting instead.

Oreo Spider FAQs

What are Pocky sticks?

Known as Mikado in the UK and most of Western Europe, Pocky sticks are a type of Japanese candy which are like pretzel sticks coated in chocolate.

Can you use chocolate chips instead of chocolate wafers?

Chocolate wafers which are also known as chocolate melts or compound chocolate, are ideal for this recipe. They have vegetable fats instead of the cocoa butter found in chocolate chips, so they don’t need to be tempered (slowly heating and cooling for a smoother, glossier result). Chocolate wafers are the best choice for anything that needs dipping, coating or decorating, but you can use regular chocolate chips if that’s all you have.

Would candy melts work instead of the chocolate?

Yes, that’s the great thing about this recipe. You can any kind of melted chocolate, candy melts or even some frosting to help the spider legs stick to the Oreo spiders.
