Valentine’s Day Marshmallows Ingredients

A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Marshmallows: You need regular marshmallows as well as mini marshmallows. Have more on hand if you want to make more than one of each bear.
Chocolate: Make Valentine’s Day extra-special by using Belgian chocolate (it’s so good!) The amounts for the chocolate are an estimate, measured before melting. Depending on how many pops you want to make and your dipping technique you may need more or less chocolate.
Candy coloring: Use only oil-based candy coloring for this project for the best results.
Edible food marker: A black food marker is the easiest way to draw on the bears’ features.

Baking ingredients and tools arranged on a table include bowls of marshmallows, chocolate, and sprinkles, perfect for crafting Valentine marshmallow pops. A jar of glitter, striped straws, food coloring, and a black pen complete this delightful setup.

How to Make Valentine’s Day Marshmallows

For more detailed instructions with weights and measurements, jump to the printable recipe card.

Begin Mr Bear: Melt some milk and white chocolate in a microwave safe dish in the microwave. Insert a paper straw or lollipop stick into a large marshmallow. Cut 3 marshmallows in half for the ears and snouts. Attach 2 mini marshmallow halves to a large marshmallow for ears and another one for the snout. Dip the bear head in melted chocolate and spoon chocolate over the face and snout, allowing excess chocolate to drip off. Put it on a wax paper or parchment paper lined plate and chill or freeze until the chocolate sets.
Add details to Mr Bear: Draw on his face with an edible black marker and add chocolate at the neck to be his bowtie. Add 2 heart sprinkles and a little bit of chocolate and gold pear for the bowtie center. Color the rest of the white chocolate pink and apply to the bear’s cheeks. Let Mr Bear set.
Begin Mrs Bear: Repeat the above steps to make Mrs Bear and put her on a wax paper lined plate and chill or freeze.
Add details to Mrs Bear: Draw on her face using edible black marker. Add 3 heart-shaped sprinkles to each ear for a flower. Add her cheeks with the pink chocolate you already made. Let Mrs Bear set.
Make the accent marshmallows: Put a marshmallow on a paper straw and dip in pink chocolate (or, if you’re out, color some white chocolate red with candy coloring). Dip into the sprinkles to coat. Leave to set on a wax paper lined plate in the refrigerator.

Substitutions and Variations

Belgian chocolate: You can use and kind of chocolate but Belgian chocolate is especially delicious. If you’re a fan of dark chocolate, you can use that to make this fun treat or melt chocolate chips in any flavor.
Candy melts: Colored candy melts save time and can be used in place of the Belgian chocolate if desired.
Valentine sprinkles: I like this Valentine sprinkles set, but you can use anything you like to personalize this Valentine’s Day treat.

Serving Suggestions

For dessert: Surprise your loved one with marshmallow pops after a romantic meal of Tuscan marry me salmon or heart-shaped pork potstickers.
As a gift:
Pair them up with a bunch of flowers, a real teddy bear, or with a cocktail-making gift set. They’d also be great in a Valentine’s Day homemade treat box.
As a sweet treat:
Enjoy these almost-too-cute-to-eat bear pops with cherries and cream jello shots.

How to Store Marshmallow Pops

Store: These are best eaten the day they are made.  They can be stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Storing them in the refrigerator causes unattractive moisture on the chocolate.
Freeze: They can crack if stored in the freezer so I don’t recommend freezing Valentine marshmallow pops.

Top Tips

Coat them carefully: Resist the urge to just dip the whole bear head in the chocolate. The ears and snout will likely fall off. By dipping just the back of the head and and sides and then spooning the chocolate over the front you are guaranteed it will stay intact once set.
Melt chocolate gently: Be careful not to overheat your chocolate; it’s best to use 15 to 20 second increments in the microwave and stir the mixture well in between, to melt the chocolate or chocolate chips gently.
Chocolate containers: Use a glass Pyrex measuring cup, deep bowl or small mason jar when melting the chocolate for the best results.

Marshmallow Valentine Treats FAQs

Is this marshmallow pops recipe suitable for kids?

Oh yes, this is a fun recipe to make with kids! Adults can do the dipping (for less mess) and kids can add sprinkles and decorations.

Where can I find an edible black food marker?

You can find them in kitchen stores and online (I used these!)

Do I need shortening or coconut oil to temper the chocolate?

Although some people add some to their chocolate when melting it for a smooth and extra-glossy finish, it’s not necessary here.

Instructions

For Mr Bear:

  • To make Mr Bear, in a deep microwave-safe bowl or mason jar melt ½ cup milk chocolate and ½ cup white chocolate in 20-second increments, stirring well in between.
  • Line a baking sheet or plate with wax paper. Set aside.
  • Start by inserting a paper straw or lollipop stick into the base of a marshmallow.
  • With kitchen shears or a sharp knife cut 3 marshmallows in half (this will be enough for 2 sets of ears and 2 snouts).
  • Add the ears by attaching two mini marshmallow halves sticky side down to a large marshmallow.
  • Add another half mini marshmallow where the snout should be on the large marshmallow. Reserve the remaining mini marshmallow halves for Mrs Bear.
  • Carefully dip the bear head in the melted chocolate concentrating on the back and sides.
  • Once coated, spoon chocolate over the front to cover the face and snout, allowing any excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl.
  • Put the bear head on a wax paper-lined plate and refrigerate to set or pop in the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Once set, draw on a face using the edible black marker.
  • Add a bow tie by applying a little bit of chocolate at the base of Mr Bear’s neck.
  • Apply 2 heart sprinkles with their points meeting in the middle.
  • Add another tiny bit of chocolate and apply a gold pearl at the center of the bow tie.
  • Tint the remaining white chocolate pink. Use a cocktail stick to apply cheeks to the bear.
  • Allow it to set.

For Mrs Bear:

  • To make Mrs Bear, use the remaining chocolate and prepared marshmallows from Mr Bear above.
  • Start by inserting a paper straw or lollipop stick into the base of a marshmallow.
  • Place the ears by attaching two mini marshmallow halves sticky side down to a large marshmallow.
  • Add another half mini marshmallow where the snout should be on the large marshmallow.
  • Carefully dip the bear head in the melted chocolate concentrating on the back and sides.
  • Once coated, spoon chocolate over the front to cover the face and snout, allowing excess chocolate to drip back into the bowl.
  • Put the bear head on a wax paper-lined plate and refrigerate to set or pop in the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Once set, draw a face using the edible black marker.
  • Add a flower by applying a little bit of chocolate to one of Mrs Bear’s ears. Attach 3 heart-shaped sprinkles over the chocolate.
  • Add another tiny bit of chocolate and apply a white pearl for the center of the flower.
  • Add the cheeks with the remaining pink chocolate.
  • Allow it to set.

Accent Marshmallows:

  • To make the accent marshmallows, use the remaining pink chocolate or color some with red candy color.
  • Add a marshmallow to a paper straw and dip in the pink or red chocolate then immediately coat in sprinkles. I used a Valentine's mix with hearts.
  • Allow to set in the fridge on the wax paper-lined plate.
