A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.

Prepare the Oreos: Separate 10 of the Oreo cookies and scrape off the cream filling. Carefully break the remaining cookies in half.
Melt the chocolate chips: Melt some of the chocolate chips and set the rest aside.
Assemble the bat Oreos: Attach the cookie wings to the Oreo cookie halves with cream on, also adding some melted chocolate chips in there to help them stick. Now stick 2 chocolate chips (for horns) and 2 candy eyes to each of the Oreo bats.
Let them set: Arrange the finished Oreo bats on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and let these easy treats set completely before serving.

Substitutions and Variations

Gluten-free option: If you want a gluten-free version, use gluten-free Double Stuf Oreos.
Another cookie: If you can’t get Oreos or you don’t want to use them, any chocolate sandwich cookies will work.
Candy eyes: You can make your own eyes for the bats using a dot of white frosting and a halved chocolate chip for each one.

How to Store Oreo Bats

Store: Keep leftovers in an airtight container for up to 1 week in the fridge or 4 to 5 days at room temperature.
Freeze: These would probably fall apart if frozen and thawed, so I don’t recommend it.

Top Tips

Melting the chocolate chips: You can use a double boiler or a microwave safe bowl in the microwave. Make sure you stir the mini chocolate chips often as they melt, so they melt evenly and don’t scorch in one place.
Lots of filling: Use Double Stuf or Mega Stuf to make bat Oreo truffles. These varieties have extra cream filling to hold the bat wings in place. If you can only find regular Oreos, add a little frosting or melted chocolate chips to the filling mixture.
Speed up the setting: Once you’ve assembled the bat Oreos, pop them in the refrigerator and they’ll set faster.

Oreo Bat FAQs

Why do you have to use mini chocolate chips if you’re just melting them?

For a couple of reasons – first, smaller ones melt quicker and second, you will be sticking a couple of the mini chocolate chips to each bat so they look like cute little horns and those mini ones are just the right size.

Can kids make this fun Halloween recipe without help?

This depends on their ages. Little kids can help you match up the broken Oreo halves for the wings, choosing pairs based on how similar they are in shape. Older ones can scrape the Oreo filling with a butter knife, melt chocolate chips and assemble the bats. Kids will have as much fun making these as you (and definitely have fun gobbling them up later!)

Would candy melts work instead of chocolate chips?

Sure! Just about anything sweet that melts and then sets again will work on these Oreo bats. For the horns you can either dot some melted candy on to form them, or just omit them.

Those chocolate chip horns – do bats have horns?

Kind of. Some bats have long (longer than their bodies!) ears which curl up to look like horns! That’s what those extra mini chocolate chips are for.

Equipment

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  • Separate 10 of the Oreo cookies in half so you get 20 halves and carefully scrape off the cream with a butter knife. The pieces without cream will be used for the bat’s wings.
  • Break the 20 remaining Oreo halves without cream in half using your hands or a thin knife and pair them up with another piece similar in size.
  • Set aside ¼ cup of mini semisweet chocolate chips for decorating the bats. Melt the remaining ½ cup of chocolate chips in a small microwave-safe bowl on the defrost or low setting. Microwave in 30-second increments, stirring between each one, until completely melted.
  • Attach the wings to one of the Oreo halves with cream filling still on it. Add a bit of melted chocolate in the center to help it stick together then top it with another Oreo cookie half. Set on the prepared baking tray.
  • Use a toothpick or skewer to paint a tiny bit of melted chocolate near the top of the bat’s head then add 2 of the chocolate chips on top to resemble horns.
  • Now add a little more melted chocolate by the center of the cookie for the bat’s eyes and stick them on. Repeat with the remaining cookies.
  • Let the chocolate set completely before serving the bat Oreos. To speed up the setting process, you can refrigerate the Oreo bats.
