Substitutions and Variations

Different candies: Any colors of M&Ms would work or you could use different candies like Skittles, white or milk chocolate chips, or butterscotch chips.
Another pretzel shape: Use pretzel twists, snaps, waffles, sticks, or any shape. You can either break them up or add them whole. If you don’t like pretzels, use extra Rice Krispie cereal and a pinch of salt.
A different cereal: Cocoa Pebbles, Cocoa Krispies or Cornflakes would work in place of the Rice Krispies.

How to Store Rice Krispie Treats

Store: These are best served the day they’re made but you can keep leftovers in an airtight container on the counter for up to 2 days. Don’t refrigerate a Rice Krispie treat – they’ll become too hard when chilled.
Freeze: They don’t freeze well.

Top Tips

Don’t skip the nonstick cooking spray: It helps hold the parchment paper in place when you add the Rice Krispies mixture and also when you’re ready to slice.
Press the Rice Krispie mixture in gently: Don’t press down too hard because this would make the treats hard.
No piping bag? Use a Ziploc bag instead.

Rice Crispy Halloween Treat FAQs

What size baking sheet is best for making these?

It depends how big you want the squares. You’ll get 8 squares from an 8- or 9-inch baking pan or 15 from a 9 x 13-inch one. You can get twice that amount if you want them smaller.

Can kids help with this recipe?

Yes, you can let them stir the Rice Krispies mixture. Remember to stir constantly so everything combines well. Older kids can drizzle the melted candy melts over the top.

How long do they take to set?

It’s best to give them an hour if you can, to be certain everything has cooled completely and set. That way, you can cut the cleanest-looking squares.
