Prepare the chocolate: Melt the chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl and spread the melted chocolate around the inside of clean frog molds. Wipe down the edges and freeze.
Make the filling: Whip the cream cheese with the sugar, vanilla and salt. Mix in the Cool Whip and put the mixture in a piping bag. Put the jam in another piping bag.
Fill the chocolate frogs: Pipe some of the jam into each frog and then some cream cheese mixture. Add more chocolate on top and smooth it over. Freeze again until completely set and then unmold and serve. If you are packing them up and want an extra special tough, you can print out these special chocolate frog boxes.

Substitutions and Variations

A different jam: Strawberry, raspberry, blueberry – anything goes! You can use seedless or regular.
Change up the flavor: Swap the vanilla extract for something different, perhaps hazelnut extract, orange extract or coconut extract.
Adjust the sweetness: You might want to use less sugar if your jam is extra-sweet.
Different chocolate: Dark chocolate, semisweet chocolate or any other kind works for these.

Savory bites: Great snacks to pair with chocolate frogs include cheese-stuffed pumpkin bites or your favorite warm appetizers. These mini Halloween charcuterie boards are adorable too!
Sweet treats: Serve up some crunchy nut brittle and caramel pretzel apple bark too.
Magical sips: How about lemon lavender vodka cocktails for the grownups and color changing lemonade for the kids?

How to Store Chocolate Covered Frogs

Store: Keep these in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Make sure they’re in a single layer so they don’t stick together.
Freeze: You can freeze them in an airtight container for up to 4 months. Use a sheet of wax paper between each layer.
Thaw: Defrost in the refrigerator overnight.

Top Tips

No piping bag? Use a Ziploc bag and snip the corner off. It’s still simpler than trying to spoon the fillings into the frogs.
Wipe the edges: It’s important to wipe the excess chocolate off the edges of each frog mold before chilling. Clean edges look so much better when they’re served.
Don’t forget the napkins: They’re not super-messy to eat but when you combine small kids with anything chocolate, it’s sure to get on their faces and fingers!

Recipe for Chocolate Frogs FAQs

Do you have to temper the chocolate to make this Harry Potter chocolate frog recipe?

It’s not compulsory. Tempering the chocolate means slowly heating and cooling it in a double boiler to create stable crystals in the mixture. The process makes the chocolate frogs a little shiner and they’ll take a few seconds longer for the frogs to melt in your hands but tempering is probably not necessary unless you’re a perfectionist. I didn’t temper mine and the chocolate frogs came out really good.

Where can I find chocolate frog molds?

Unless you’re planning a magical trip to Diagon Alley, the wizarding world’s main shopping mecca, you’re probably better off buying them online! These are the ones I used for mine.

Is there such thing as a sugar-free version of chocolate frogs?

Actually yes! Use full-fat cream cheese, a good quality dark chocolate which is lower in sugar or sugar-free chocolate, and also choose a sugar-free jam. As for the brown sugar, you can use brown Swerve in its place.

Harry Potter Chocolate Frogs Recipe

Recreate the famous Harry Potter chocolate frogs. There's no cooking involved and this recipe is super-easy and fun. Perfect for Halloween or movie night.
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cooling Time: 1 hour
Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
Servings: 16 frogs

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Wash and dry the frog molds.
  • Melt the chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl in the microwave in 15 second increments, stirring in between until melted and smooth.
  • Add about a teaspoon of the chocolate to each frog mold. Spread the chocolate around until the frogs are coated. Tap the bottom of each mold on the countertop to get rid of any air bubbles. Remove any excess chocolate from the centers if necessary to make sure there’s enough space for the frog filling.
  • Wipe the edges of the frogs to remove excess chocolate and set the tray in the freezer to cool.
  • Meanwhile, whip the cream cheese in a mixing bowl until smooth.
  • Add the brown sugar, salt and vanilla. Whip again and add the Cool Whip to the mixture when it’s smooth. Continue to mix until combined.
  • Put the cream cheese mixture in one piping bag and the blackberry jam in another.
  • Take the chocolate frogs out of the freezer once set.
  • Pipe about ¾ tablespoon of blackberry jam into the bottom of each frog. Pipe about a teaspoon of cream cheese mixture on top and smooth the cream cheese with a butter knife if necessary. Make sure you leave enough space above the cream cheese mixture so the chocolate can cover it without the mold overflowing.
  • Now, spoon more melted chocolate over the top of the cream cheese mixture and spread it around. Tap the mold on the countertop to get rid of any bubbles in the chocolate.
  • With a paper towel or clean finger, wipe around the outer edges of the frogs to get rid of any excess chocolate. The cleaner the edges are now, the better the frogs will come out.
  • Put the frogs back into the freezer to let them harden.
  • After about half an hour you can unmold them; the frogs should pop out easily when turned upside down. If they won’t, put them back in the freezer for a little longer.
  • Serve right away or keep them in a single layer in an airtight container in the fridge.

Notes

No piping bag? Use a Ziploc bag and snip the corner off. It’s still simpler than trying to spoon the fillings into the frogs.
