Layer the ingredients: Layer the ingredients in mason jars in this order: flour, oats, brown sugar, white sugar, baking soda, ground cinnamon, salt, and finally chocolate chips.
Attach the labels: Tie 2 pieces of twine together in a bowl under the jar rim and attach the labels, either using tape or a hole punch and the twine.
Make cookie dough: Ready to make the cookies? Empty the contents of the jar into a large bowl. Combine the egg, vanilla and softened butter with a wooden spoon. Mix a small amount of the flour mixture into the egg mixture at a time, until all the ingredients are well combined.
Bake cookies: Shape the dough into balls and arrange them on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Bake in a preheated oven for about 10 minutes or until golden brown, then cool completely on wire racks.

Substitutions and Variations

Gluten-free option: If you want a gluten-free version, use gluten-free flour instead of wheat flour and gluten-free chocolate chips. Oats are naturally gluten-free but check for a “gluten-free” label as some are processed in a facility that also processes gluten-containing products.
Chocolate chips: Use dark chocolate, milk chocolate, semi-sweet chocolate, or even white chocolate chips. Or a mixture! You could even swap some out for peanut butter chips or butterscotch chips.
Make them nutty: Add chopped pecans, walnuts or hazelnuts to your oatmeal cookies for some crunch.

Top Tips

A dry cookie mix: Because this is a cookie mix in a jar, it will seem dry at first when you mix the ingredients, so keep stirring everything together until the dough combines properly.
Pack the sugar down: When you add the brown sugar, pack it down with the back of a spoon to make enough room for the rest of the ingredients.
Use brown and white sugar: This adds depth of flavor to the cookies and the brown sugar gives a subtle caramel taste.
Reusable mason jar lids: I used the reusable Mason jar lids to elevate this cookie mix for gift giving. The reusable lids are great to have once you finish the cookie mix (I used these!)

How long can I store cookie mix in a jar for?

As long as you keep it somewhere dark and cool, it should keep for up to 6 months. If you added nuts, it will only keep for up to 3 months.

Can I double or triple the recipe?

Sure! You can make as many jars of the home baked cookies mixture as you want. As long as you have enough mason jars and lids, enough ingredients and enough labels and twine, you’re good to go!
