This salted butterscotch White Russian is my fall twist on the classic cocktail, with butterscotch schnapps joining the usual vodka, coffee liqueur and cream. I love the salted butterscotch rim because that little hit of salt balances the sweetness and makes every sip better. A drizzle of butterscotch sauce inside the glass and a pinch of nutmeg make it feel extra special without adding much work. Best of all, it takes just 5 minutes to make.

Why You’ll Love It

A salted butterscotch white Russian blends vodka, coffee liqueur and schnapps with cream for a rich, cozy cocktail that offers both sweet and salty notes.
Sweet and salty: The salted butterscotch rim is my favorite part. You get sweet, buttery caramel flavor followed by just enough salt to keep the drink from tasting overly sweet.
Ready in 5 minutes: There’s no cocktail shaker or complicated technique needed. You can build the whole drink right in the glass.
A fun White Russian twist: Butterscotch schnapps works so well with coffee liqueur, vodka and cream while still keeping everything I love about a classic White Russian.
Made for fall: Butterscotch and nutmeg give this an autumn feel without going the usual pumpkin spice route.

Salted Butterscotch White Russian Ingredients
A complete list of ingredients and amounts can be found in the recipe card below.
Butterscotch sauce: This is used for both the rim and the drizzle inside the glass. I use Mrs. Richardson’s Butterscotch Dessert Sauce, but Smucker’s butterscotch topping works too. Look for it with the ice cream toppings at the grocery store.
Sea salt: Don’t skip this! The little bit of salt on the rim balances all the sweet butterscotch flavor.
Butterscotch schnapps: I use DeKuyper’s Buttershots for its sweet, buttery flavor. Other brands work too, but check the alcohol percentage because it can vary quite a bit between brands.
Coffee liqueur: Kahlúa is my usual choice, but you can use your favorite coffee liqueur. Its deep coffee flavor is especially good with the sweet butterscotch.
Vodka: There’s no need for flavored vodka unless you want to change things up. A regular vodka lets the coffee and butterscotch flavors stand out.
Heavy cream: This gives the White Russian its signature creamy finish. Pour it in last if you want that pretty layered look.
Nutmeg: Just a pinch on top adds a subtle warm spice that works surprisingly well with the coffee and butterscotch.

For more detailed instructions with weights and measurements, jump to the printable recipe card.
Rim the glass: Dip the rim into butterscotch sauce, followed by sea salt.
Add the drizzle: Drizzle a little more butterscotch sauce around the inside of the glass.
Add the ice: Fill the glass with ice.
Build the cocktail: Pour in the butterscotch schnapps, coffee liqueur and vodka, then finish with the heavy cream.
Garnish and serve: Sprinkle a pinch of nutmeg over the top. Leave it layered for presentation or give it a stir before drinking.

Substitutions and Variations
Make it dairy-free: Replace the heavy cream with a rich oat or coconut cream. Keep in mind that coconut cream will add some coconut flavor.
Use caramel sauce: If you can’t find butterscotch sauce, caramel sauce works for the rim and drizzle. The flavor will be a little different, but you still get that delicious sweet-and-salty combination.
Try vanilla vodka: Swap the regular vodka for vanilla vodka for a sweeter, more dessert-like White Russian.
Add chocolate: Add a small drizzle of chocolate syrup to the glass for a butterscotch mocha twist.
Make it alcohol-free: Use coffee syrup, butterscotch syrup and cream or milk over ice for a simple mocktail inspired by the same flavors.

Serving Suggestions
With savory bites: Serve some jalapeno popper tacos, cheese puff pastry twists or million dollar deviled eggs with your white Russians.
With something sweet: Enjoy some salted caramel snickerdoodle cookies or chocolate fudge cookies.

How to Store Salted Butterscotch Cocktails
Store: This cocktail is best made fresh because the ice will dilute the drink and you lose that pretty layered look as it sits. If you want to get ahead, you can measure the vodka, coffee liqueur and butterscotch schnapps together and refrigerate the mixture until you’re ready to assemble the drink.
Freeze: I don’t recommend freezing this cocktail.

Top Tips
Don’t overdo the salt: You want just enough sea salt to balance the butterscotch, not a thick salty crust around the glass. A light coating is plenty.
Chill the glass: Pop the glass in the refrigerator or freezer while you gather the ingredients. I love this extra cold, especially since there’s no shaking involved.
Pour the cream last: If you want that pretty layered White Russian look, slowly pour the heavy cream over the other ingredients once they’re in the glass.
Stir before sipping: I like to serve it layered because it looks so good, then stir everything together before drinking so you get coffee, butterscotch and cream in every sip.
Don’t skip the nutmeg: You only need a pinch, but it adds a subtle warm spice that really works with the butterscotch and coffee flavors.

Salted Butterscotch White Russian FAQs
Yes, the cocktail will still work without it, but I really recommend keeping it. The salt balances the sweetness from the butterscotch schnapps and sauce, while the butterscotch on the rim gives you a little extra flavor with each sip.
A rocks glass or short tumbler is perfect. You want enough room for plenty of ice plus the cocktail and cream without needing an oversized glass.
That’s really up to you. I like to pour the cream in last and serve the cocktail layered because it looks so pretty, then stir it before drinking so the vodka, coffee liqueur, butterscotch and cream are evenly combined.
Yes. Mix the vodka, coffee liqueur and butterscotch schnapps ahead of time and keep it chilled. When you’re ready to serve, rim each glass, add ice and the cocktail mixture, then finish each one with heavy cream and nutmeg. This keeps the drinks cold without letting a pitcher of ice dilute them.

This is such a fun White Russian to pull out once fall rolls around, especially when I want something a little more interesting than the classic version. The butterscotch makes it sweet and indulgent, but that salted rim on this salted caramel butterscotch White Russian keeps everything balanced, and I love the little hint of nutmeg on top. It also takes only 5 minutes to make, which is always a bonus when friends are over and I’m mixing more than one.

Where do you get Mrs. Richardson’s Butterscotch Dessert Sauce? I can’t find it in Southern California. Can I use Mrs. Richardson’s Butterscotch? Or is that too thick?
I believe it’s the same thing, they changed the name in 2019 according to their website. The Smuckers butterscotch topping would also be good if you prefer that one.
