I’m sure there’s some kind of passion fruit cocktail that’s more thirst-quenching than this one. I just can’t think of one! This passion fruit lime margarita ticks a lot of boxes. It’s easy to make, refreshing and delicious, and great if you have company! This easy margarita recipe that is always a hit on hot days.

You will love this fresh fruit margarita as the passion fruit and lime is a refreshing summer flavor combination.

Passion fruit and lime team up with tequila and Cointreau (margarita staples!) I also add honey for sweetness, although agave syrup or simple syrup would also be fine.

I love this fresh fruit margarita because I can make it ahead, which saves time if you have a lot of thirsty folk on their way over! It will free up your time to make the snacks.

How to Make Passion Fruit Lime Margarita

This easy margarita recipe includes both passion fruit and lime, for a fruity taste. I used passion fruit pulp as the base flavour. If you can’t find it, look out for passion fruit puree which is similar except it doesn’t have seeds in.

Buy either fresh or frozen, whichever you can get. If you have the time, you could even scoop the pulp out of fresh passion fruits yourself.

You can also choose from fresh lime juice or bottled. I would say the difference in flavour, once combined with the other ingredients, is minimal.

So, to make this passion fruit cocktail, you need to put the passion fruit pulp (or puree!) in a pitcher with the lime juice.

Measure out the tequila and Cointreau and add those too. Also add the honey. Top the pitcher up with ice cubes and lime slices.

Ready to serve it? Then rub a wedge of lime around the rim of each glass and dip into rimming salt. The finished cocktails can be garnished with lime slices, or you might like jalapeno slices or even fresh herbs like basil or mint.

Can I Make this Passion Fruit and Lime Cocktail Ahead?

You can, but if you’re preparing it in advance, don’t add the ice. Just cover the top of the pitcher with plastic wrap. Then keep the passion fruit lime margarita refrigerated until you’re ready to serve it.

What is Rimming Salt?

You will see this easy margarita recipe calls for rimming salt. You might be wondering what that is. A passion fruit lime margarita can be served without the salty rim (and some people prefer that) but traditionally the glass rim is salted.

Rimming salt might be labeled as such or it might be labeled as margarita salt. This is the same thing. Because this salt is supposed to stick to the rim of a glass, it’s coarse-grained.

Passion fruit and lime are already a wonderful pairing, but add some salt, and you have a brand-new flavour to the fresh fruit margarita. Coarse salt is usually sea salt which is harvested in a big pond and slowly evaporated, so it forms big crystals.

You might see coloured rimming salt, or salt that’s been dyed. This means you could use for example pink salt on Valentine’s Day or green on St Patrick’s.

If you can’t find rimming salt or you don’t want to head out just for that one item, you can use kosher salt or coarse sea salt instead.

Passion Fruit Lime Margarita Variations

This passion fruit cocktail is simple to make, but perhaps you want to tweak the ingredients. The tequila and lime are the base ingredients of an easy margarita recipe so you’ll want to keep those.

You could exchange the passion fruit pulp for another kind of fruit if you want. Any fruit would go here, and mango is especially good!

As for the Cointreau, this orange liqueur is perfect in margaritas.  Saying that, Grand Marnier or any brand of Triple Sec would work instead. Cointreau is actually a top-shelf brand of Triple Sec.

The honey in this fresh fruit margarita could be switched for a simple syrup or agave nectar. You might even want to leave it out, in which case consider ‘sugaring’ the glass rim instead of salting it, or use some of each!

Finally, you can tweak the garnishes. I love adding jalapeno and fresh herbs to this passion fruit and lime cocktail. But it’s fun to come up with new garnishes. Since garnishes are only there to look pretty, you don’t even have to add any!
